Keeper's Cottage Stud

Image
In October 2014, John Lowe shot and killed Christine Lee and her daughter, Lucy Lee. All on the six-acre puppy farm, Keeper's Cottage Stud. After the terrible incident, John Lowe was sentenced to life, and the farm has since been left abandoned. Lowe had been repeatedly reported to RSPCA for his breeding practices, and was even featured on a BBC documentary 'Inside Out.’ In 2009 he was convicted of illegal dog breeding, fined, and banned from breeding dogs for five years. After shooting Christine Lee in the home in 2014, her daughter Lucy Lee ran from the property, while calling police. She then cuts the telephone call, and returns to the property, before being shot by John Lowe. Lowe also turns the gun to four of the dogs on site, before he is arrested by police. Transcripts of the telephone call and overhead footage of the farm after the incident can be easily found online. There have been talks of the farm being demolished, and new modern cottages built on the site. But

Church of St John the Baptist

The church is a partial ruin set in the old grounds of Carmel College. (See our post on Carmel College here .) The church itself is set on the river back, and is one of the many Grade II listed buildings on the site. People estimate the church was built in the 12th century, with heavy renovations and works though out the 18th century. In 1981 the church was declared redundant. The church has been left open, and many people in the community see to its running, such as general cleaning and leaving fresh flowers. It is a beautifully small church, and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

The grounds were apparently sold to property developers after is closure, but this was overturned by the charity commision whom claimed the land was greatly undersold. There are a number of different and sprawling buildings on the site, most noteably, the synagogue with stained glass windows from artist Nehemia Azas. Also the Dinning hall and Ampitheatre are Grade II listed buildings, due to the architecture of Thomas Hancock. The Julius Gottlieb gallery and Boathouse, designed by Sir Basil Spense, are also Grade II listed. Currently there are a number of new houses on the estate, the Boathouse has been converted into a home, and the site when not being used for filming, or police drills, it is having extensive work done in some of the buildings. We did not expect so many people to be on site, and it certainl
